Are you asking yourself, “What is Grout?” Grout is the stuff between your tiles. Grout is used for filling joints or cracks, especially in tiling. Grout is simply a colored form of concrete typically used to fill the space between porcelain tile, stone, terrazzo, ceramic and other flooring materials. Grout is a thin mortar which may be used to fill cracks in masonry, tile, or brickwork. Grout constructs hard, dense joints that are resistant to shrinking and cracking.
Because grout is a magnet for dirt because it is so porous, it absorbs it like a sponge. Under a microscope grout looks like hills and valleys. These “hills and valleys” are like traps for dirt, mildew, bacteria and mold, and over the course of time the true color will be hidden underneath it, and that will take away from the beauty of your floors and also may cause health risks to you and your loved ones.

The first thing to know before cleaning your grout is simple chemistry. Concrete is made from burned lime and clay. Lime is an alkaline, which means you can create a chemical reaction with any acidic product to get your grout clean.
- Clean your grout first with water and allow to dry. This will remove any loose surface debris (you should be using a good floor cleaner such as Groutrageous™ Tile and Grout maintainer.
- Never use bleach on colored grout, as it will discolor the grout.
- Use a stiff brush for scrubbing. Old toothbrushes will be too soft to remove anything.
- Avoid using metal brushes, as they’ll wear away your grout.
- If using commercial cleaners, bleach, or other chemicals, make sure the room you’re working in is well ventilated.
- Use gloves and protective eye wear when working with any chemical-based cleaners.
- Test your grout cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure that it won’t erode or damage your grout work, especially if your grout is old or damaged.
- NEVER mix cleaners together! Chemical reactions can cause noxious fumes or burns if the mixture touches the skin.
A Better Way to Clean Grout
What is that ugly, dark stuff between the tiles?
Dirt buildup – Bacteria – Mildew – E.Coli – Grease Stains – Soap Scum – Water Deposit – Mineral Deposits – Lime Deposits. It can also cause health concerns for family, friends and pets, not to speak of embarrassment when neighbors visit your home.
Most people associate grout cleaning with baking soda, vinegar/bleach along with using a household toothbrush and getting on your hands and knees and doing lots and lots of hard scrubbing. This takes a long time, which is frustrating and difficult work – backbreaking at times – and is not very effective (or an easy job). When using our Groutrageous™ Grout Cleaner STEP 1 your floors will be looking like new in a fraction of the time.
A brush with stiff bristles is ideal when cleaning grout. Toothbrush bristles are too soft to do a proper job. Also, avoid using metal bristles which can wear away the actual grout you’re trying to clean!
Spray Groutrageous™ Grout Cleaner STEP 1 onto the grout lines, do a small area at a time, let sit for 2-5 minutes. Use a professional grout brush (click for grout brushes), stand up and agitate the grout lines until you start to see dirty foam. That’s how you know it’s working. DO NOT ALLOW STEP 1 TO DRY ON SURFACE.
Wipe up dirty residue with rags or sponges, then immediately use 4 oz of Groutrageous™ Grout Rinse STEP 2, per gallon of water. Rinse floor thoroughly with mop and pail. Repeat rinse with clean water. This second procedure will neutralize the pH level correctly and stop the cleaning action of the step 1 chemical.
